Yet taking part in affiliate marketing can be a lucrative way to earn an income. For the lowdown on what affiliate marketing is all about and how to get involved, read on.

What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is a relationship between an individual (the affiliate marketer) and another person or organisation (called a merchant) who sells goods or services. The affiliate marketer promotes the merchant's goods or services. They normally do this by setting up their own website or blog, and including information on the site about the products or services, together with links. When people visit the affiliate marketer's site, and are interested in the information about the products or services, they would then hopefully click on the links, which then direct the visitor to the merchant's site. The visitor would then be able to purchase the particular good or service. When a sale is made, the affiliate marketer gets compensated for their efforts. For the merchant, it is a good way to increase customer numbers and revenue.

How do you get started?
To get started in affiliate marketing, you need to think about what sort of products or services you want to promote. It's worth thinking about what kind of things you're interested in, as it makes it easier to promote something you value yourself. You then need to sign up to an affiliate network. There are lots of different programs to choose from within a network and there are lots of things you might want to consider before you pick a particular program or product to promote. For instance, it might seem tempting to pick one that pays a high level of commission, but if it is a very niche area, it might be hard to gain many sales from it. Equally, if you pick a type of product which lots of other affiliate marketers are promoting, then you face competition, which could impact on commission.

Creating content
In order to promote a merchant's products or services, you need to set up a website or blog. This doesn't have to be very sophisticated and you don't need technical expertise, although it's important to make sure your site is neat, free from mistakes and easy to navigate. Make use of online resources to guide you with setting this up. Once you've got the bones of your site up and running, you need to add content to it. The content will be related to the types of products you're going to promote, and the type of person you want to attract to your site. Content can be in the form of informational articles, reviews, newsletters, etc. Within your site you need to provide links that relate to the products so that they can be clicked on and directed to the merchant's site.

Monitoring and reviewing
Once you're up and running, you will be able to review how your affiliate marketing efforts are going, which products are selling well and which aren't. This will be helpful in determining income and areas that are more profitable to focus on.
